Slow Food Network connects initiatives globally, striving to "prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us."[1]


Stemming from the opposition to the upsurge of fast-food restaurants in Italy at the end of 1980s, the eco-gastronomic, member-supported movement has spread around the world since the beginning of 1990s. Since then, Slow Food has developped membership in 160 countries and has formed national networks in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, United States, Japan, Great Britain, Brazil, Kenya, South Korea etc.

The movement is organised as an association with international headquarters in Bra, Italy. The association has an International Council and Executive Committee. National chapters have decisional autonomy but they follow the political guidelines decided by Slow Food International.[2]

In addition to this, there are over 1500 Slow Food communities worldwide, as well as three affiliate bodies:

The basic idea of Slow Food has later extended to other fields. The book [3] (page 114) says: "A further development of Slow Food movement is the Slow City movement which builds on the ideas of Slow Food but extends the philosophy to cities and destinations. Following on from the Slow Food and Slow City movements, Slow Tourism has evolved as an extension of this philosophy to encompass travel and tourism activities. There is very little research on Slow Tourism, but nevertheless there is a growing interest in this concept."
